1st of May is a strategy game that can be played by up to six players. The object of the game is to be the first player to score 21 points or more. Points are scored by melding cards, and the player who plays the last card in a turn also scores a point.

The following instructions will guide you through your first game of 1st of May.

The Deck

1st of May is played with a standard 52-card deck. Aces are worth 1 point, 2s through 10s are worth face value, and a Jack, Queen or King (J,Q,K) are each worth 10 points.

After the shuffle, each player is dealt 10 cards face down. The remaining cards form the stock, which is placed face down in the center of the table.

The player to the left of the dealer starts the game by flipping over the top card of their deck - this is their first card.

## The Play

On a player's turn, they must play one card from their hand. Cards can be played either melded or unmelded. A melded card consists of three or four cards of the same rank (eg 3-3-3 or Q-Q-Q) and must be placed in front of the player so that all other players can see it. An unmelded card can be any other rank.

If a player cannot play a card, they must draw one from the stock and then play one from their hand. When drawing a card from the stock, if the next card is higher than the last card drawn then that card must be added to the current meld - this forms a continuous sequence (eg 4-5-6). If the next card is lower than the last card drawn then that card becomes part of the player's hand (eg 2-3-4 becomes 2-3-4-5). There is no limit to how many cards can be added to a meld as long as they are all of the same rank. If at any time a player has no cards left in their hand, they must draw two cards from stock and end their turn.
